Police have arrested and charged Trevor Downey, 28, after a cab driver received serious but non-life-threatening injuries in an early morning assault Thursday at College Street and Spadina Avenue.

A police spokesperson said a man had arranged for a taxi and was advised he would have to pay upfront for the ride. An argument broke out between the man and the cab driver, which escalated into a physical confrontation. The man then tried to take the driver’s wallet. When the driver attempted to prevent this, the man stabbed him in the back with a knife.

The driver was able to report the incident to the police, who made an arrest nearby.

Downey has been charged with assault, assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, robbery with an offensive weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.
