The Barbara Hall ‘bark’ Halloween Contest

Church-Wellesley community and The 519 come together to judge the best dog costumes

The 519 is a non-profit charitable organization operating out of the Church-Wellesley neighbourhood. The organization is dedicated to advocacy and inclusion of LGBTQ2S people in the Toronto. 

On Oct. 22 The 519, along with the Barbara Hall Dog Park Association held a dog Halloween costume contest hosted by drag queens Fay Slift and Fluffy Soufflé. The event saw the community gather for a fun-filled afternoon of dogs, costumes, and some serious judging.

“It has been really heartwarming to see the community come together in the park,” said Megan Poole, manager of community relations and communications for The 519.  “I know there has been a lot of challenges in the neighborhood and we’re really excited to be able to bring back some joyful activity to the park.”

Contestants and their owners await the judging panel before showing off their best costume looks on the runway.

Judging deliberations start off strong with the first contestants scoring 11 out of 10 for overall costume presentation. 

Obi enjoys his pacifier once it has been dipped in his puppicino as he gets ready for the runway. 

Penny was ready to take it to the ring and fight for her spot in the competition.

Event organizers, Megan Poole and Tara Schorr, along with Fay and Fluffy announce the winners of the contest. 

Bobby the beagle and his owners take home the prize for best dressed trio in their lobster and prawn costume.

Elton John, the great dane, takes home the best solo costume prize for his cowboy costume. With honourable mentions going out to his supporting dogs. 

Dressed as Pennywise from the movie It, Rufus takes home the prize for scariest costume of the day.

After nearly two years of in-person events being put on hold due to pandemic restrictions, community members were able to finally gather together and rebuild connections, all thanks to their furry friends.
