Following an abrupt leave of absence from their Campus Group Coordinator, responsible for supporting over 200 campus groups and course unions, that lead to operational delays and backlogs, Toronto Metropolitan University’s Students’ Union (TMSU) has had a busy start to the fall semester.

Here are the key takeaways from their first board meeting of the fall semester on Oct. 1.

1. By-Law Policy:

TMSU will be updating their policy surrounding faculty directors, allowing them to serve as executives of a TMSU student group or a course union simultaneously. Citing that serving on those student groups and course unions regularly develops relevant experience and transferable skills that may be helpful as a TMSU faculty director.

2. Anti-Fraud & Anti-Corruption:

To create more transparent nominations, TMSU are now requiring that all election candidates submit a resume, cover letter and reference verification as part of the nomination process. Ensuring that candidates will meet the many responsibilities of an elected office, helping create transparency during the nomination process.

In addition to this, TMSU are requiring the Elections & Referenda Committee (ERC) to identify individuals who repeatedly violate the Elections Procedures Code (EPC) and authorize them to independently investigate their conduct to decide whether disciplinary action is warranted.

3. GIC Investment:

TMSU are moving forward with putting into place a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) account. Using available and unused money, the account will be used to diversify investment for the Union and relieve the reliance on student fees.

The financial committee and TMSU management will review the union’s financial position to determine how much money can be put toward investing in the account. The investment returns will likely be spent on larger TMU programs; there is currently no specification for how much money will be invested into the GIC account.

4. Nap Room:

Lastly, TMSU has been working towards creating a safe napping space for tired students around campus. The policy has been finalized, and the delivery date has been delayed to mid-October.
