A video circulating on social media shows a person poking holes in condoms taken from a free condom station at Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) Centre for Safer Sex and Sexual Violence Support (C3SVS).
The original video was posted by Instagram user @bloombunni and has since been reposted.
In the video, the unidentified person takes condoms from a campus supply before using a needle to puncture them while smiling at the camera.
A second video posted by the same account shows the user at a pub, handing out the condoms from the earlier video.
The Toronto Metropolitan Students’ Union (TMSU) responded on their own Instagram account that they found these actions “egregious and unacceptable,” and wrote that they “cannot in good faith, allow for the safe distribution of condoms in open, unmonitored spaces.”
TMU’s Community Safety and Security (CSS) team became aware of the incident after receiving reports from community members and seeing the video circulating on social media, said Josh Fortier, Executive Director, Community Safety and Security, in an email.
It has since been reported to the Toronto Police Service and remains under investigation.
The C3SVS has discarded all affected products and has temporarily paused restocking its open, unmonitored dispenser.
Students can still access the condoms directly through the C3SVS office.
Mehar Jolly, a second-year sociology student at TMU, called the incident “terrible” and said, “I think she should be held accountable, face some sort of repercussions … I don’t understand what exactly her goal is.”
The video, reposted by the account @get_yorked, received over 600 comments in two days. The top comment called the act “horrific” and gained over 21,000 likes.
Isaac Vasquez Mino, a third-year Media Production student at TMU, said the potential consequences could be significant.
“I don’t feel like people understand how much that can change the course of people’s lives,” said Vasquez Mino.
Vasquez Mino said condoms are intended to provide protection, and damaging them could have serious consequences.
“Imagine having a kid you didn’t expect to have because some idiot poked a hole in your condom,” he said.
Students seeking support should connect with C3SVS directly, and consent comes first which offers sexual health resources, peer support, and support for those impacted by sexual violence.
