The Korean Artists Society of Canada (KASC) unveils its 35th annual exhibition in Toronto this week, under this year’s theme “Unity in Diversity.”
The exhibition will feature works by 45 artists of the KASC, 12 artists from the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA), and five Korean university students. The theme celebrates how different cultural roots and personal stories come together to create a vibrant community.
“I think we are serving as ambassadors for Korea,” Sungmi Kong, the president of KASC, said. According to her, it is their ultimate goal to introduce Korean culture and traditions to a wider audience through art.
The exhibition promises to bring together Korean-Canadian traditions and local Ontario-based artists, creating a space where different cultures and stories can coexist. It aims to create artistic friendships between people from different backgrounds to reflect the theme.
The exhibition shines a light on artists who work with different mediums and techniques, including the traditional Korean Hanji paper, 3D art form and natural pigments.
Kong added that preserving these traditions also means maintaining their roots by exposing the children of immigrants in Canada to Korean culture through indirect experiences.
The opening reception of the exhibition will be taking place on Nov. 7 at the Joseph D. Carrier Gallery in Columbus Centre located on 901 Lawrence Ave West.
