Access to the bridge connecting Kerr Hall East (KHE) to the Rogers Communications Centre (RCC) is temporarily restricted due to unplanned repairs according to Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) Facilities Management.
The bridge is a high traffic area used by many students, especially during the cold and wet days.
“I use this bridge almost every day to get to my class,” said Gonza Kisoro, a fourth-year sociology student at TMU. “I dread walking outside in the cold and in the crowds…hopefully they reopen it before midterms because it’s a faster way to get to class.”
Down below the bridge, Church St. and the surrounding sidewalks have yet to be cleared of snow, which makes the journey from building to building more treacherous than using the bridge, especially for people with physical disabilities.
Management said they are seeking to prevent damage to building systems during the extreme cold temperatures while contractors seal the inside of the bridge, blocking cold air from entering both buildings.
The Kerr Hall bridge was previously repaired back in September of 2021 and was completed in December of the same year due to the harsh winter conditions. Since students and staff were working remotely during the pandemic, TMU’s facilities management was able to repair the bridge more quickly and with less disruption.
Though both the university and facilities management did not provide information on when the bridge will reopen, there are alternative routes students and staff can take.
In the statement provided by the management, they advise anyone entering the two buildings to use the 60 Gould St. entrance to access KHE and the 80 Gould St. entrance to access the RCC.
