The Toronto Blue Jays kicked off their 50th season in dramatic fashion with a 3–2 walk-off win over the Athletics on opening day at Rogers Centre, hoping to reignite the excitement of the 2025 season, where they fell short in game seven of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Powered by core players Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk, alongside George Springer, Ernie Clement, and Daulton Varsho, the Blue Jays surged late in the 2025 season to secure a playoff spot. Their resilience carried them through the American League bracket, defeating the New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners to return to the World Series for the first time since 1993. Their postseason push reignited excitement across the city and drew national attention, re-establishing Toronto as a contender on baseball’s biggest stage.

Key players from the 2025 run returned on March 27 for the opener, alongside a couple of new clubhouse additions: Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto, frontline starter Dylan Cease, and pitcher Cody Ponce.

BLUE JAYS VS. ATHLETICS – OPENING DAY RECAP

The night began with a celebratory opening ceremony, highlighted by the unveiling of the club’s third American League Championship Series (ALCS) banner, setting the tone for another milestone year in Toronto.

On the mound, pitcher Kevin Gausman set a new Blue Jays opening day record by striking out 11 batters on just 83 pitches.

The Athletics struck first in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run from Shea Langeliers, but Toronto responded in the bottom of the fifth when shortstop Andrés Giménez tripled to drive in newcomer Kazuma Okamoto and infielder Ernie Clement, giving the Blue Jays a 2–1 lead.

The Athletics clawed back in the top of the ninth to tie the game with another home run from Langeliers, setting up a tense finish.

However, in the bottom half, Giménez played hero, delivering a walk-off single that brought Okamoto home and sealed a thrilling 3–2 victory to open the 2026 season.

BLUE JAYS VS. ATHLETICS – GAME TWO RECAP

The Toronto Blue Jays pulled off an incredible edge-of-your-seat 8–7 win in 11 innings over the Athletics, rallying from a 6–2 deficit in the sixth inning to cap off an electric afternoon at Rogers Centre.

The game began with a special moment as Canadian Olympian Ivanie Blondin, a recent medalist at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics Games, delivered the ceremonial first pitch.

The Blue Jays found themselves chasing the game early.

Though that didn’t stop new Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease from breaking a new record for the franchise in his impressive Blue Jays debut (12 strikeouts — the most in a Blue Jays debut).

Pandemonium broke out in the sixth inning when the Athletics came through with a grand slam home run, but the Blue Jays’ offence came alive later in the game with a clutch first-season home run from catcher Alejandro Kirk, which helped tie the game at the bottom of the ninth inning.

Despite being left out of the lineup, the appearance of outfielder Addison Barger drew a thunderous roar from the crowd and in return, he delivered a hit in the bottom of the 10th to keep the team’s comeback alive.

After forcing extra innings, the Blue Jays completed the rally in the 11th inning with a decisive RBI knock from Ernie Clement, sealing a resilient walk-off-style victory.

These last two games with back-to-back walk-off wins marked the first time this has been done in franchise history.

BLUE JAYS VS. ATHLETICS – GAME THREE RECAP

The conclusion of this three-game series saw the Toronto Blue Jays with a clean sweep opening weekend victory against the Athletics, finishing off with a 5-2 Sunday afternoon win.

Pitcher Eric Lauer took to the mound for his season debut with an incredible nine strikeouts to open the game. With 47 strikeouts (and counting) this weekend, the Blue Jays have set a new MLB record for most strikeouts in the first three games of a season

After having a difficult game two, outfielder George Springer finally gets a solo home run in the opening pitch for the Blue Jays – marking his 64th career leadoff home run.

Once Springer set the stage for the game, the Blue Jays became unstoppable, most notably by the efforts of their new roster additions.

Outfielder Jesús Sánchez hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third, while Okamoto scored his first-ever home run as a Blue Jay and as an MLB player in the bottom of the fourth.

As it seemed like the Athletics were slowly catching up in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run, Barger walked to score the team’s fifth run in the bottom of the fifth and pitcher Jeff Hoffman came in the ninth inning to strike out the Athletics and secure a clean sweep win for the Blue Jays.

The Toronto Blue Jays will face the Colorado Rockies for a three-game series starting Monday before flying out to the Midwest to face the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.
